The baseball season is over for the Wartburg Knights following a 5-1 loss to Washington (Mo.) in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 20, 2016).

Junior right fielder Jake Thumann (DeWitt) accounted for Wartburg's only of the game when the umpires upheld his solo home run in the sixth inning. The ball appeared to go left of the foul pole, but umpires discussed and upheld the fair call.

The home run extended Thumann's hitting streak to 15 games. He also reached base safely in the 18 games. Both marks were season bests for the second-seeded Knights (34-13).

Washington (33-17) jumped on Wartburg for a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on a double off the left-center field wall. A three-run third inning extended the Bears' lead to 4-0.

Fourth-seeded Washington scored its final run on a squeeze bunt in the eighth inning.

Junior Max Langheinrich (Minnetonka, Minn.) pitched the complete game for Wartburg. He recorded seven strike outs.
