2018 Iowa High School Girls State Volleyball Tournament

There will be a new Class 2A champion at the Iowa High School Girls State Volleyball Tournament in 2018.

Dike-New Hartford, which had won a title in six of the last seven years, was denied the opportunity this season. Unity Christian of Orange City showed no fear against the Wolverines while sweeping the quarterfinal match at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 7).

Set scores were 25-22, 25-13 and 25-19.

The Wolverines built a 21-20 edge in the first set, before Unity Christian closed it out with a 5-1 run. The Knights then opened the second set with 11-straight points.

It was the earliest state tournament exit for the Wolverines in 10 years. The last time they failed to make out of the quarterfinals was in 2008.

The two-time defending champions were out-hit .310-.049. Junior Morgan Weber led Dike-New Hartford with 13 kills, while senior Amber Rickert finished with 10. Lexie Fager, one of five freshmen on the roster, tallied a team-high 11 digs for Dike-New Hartford.

The Wolverines finished their season at 35-13. Unity Christian (31-7) moves on to play top-seed Dyersville Beckman Catholic in a semifinal match at 2 PM on Thursday.
