Gladbrook-Reinbeck Will Play For State Championship
Gladbrook-Reinbeck will play for a state championship for the second time in three years.
The Rebels (26-2) advanced to the Class 1A title game by upsetting top-ranked and unbeaten North Linn 58-53 in the semifinals Thursday morning (March 9, 2017).
Joe Smoldt led the scoring for Gladbrook-Reinbeck, tallying 19 points. Tyler Pierce added 17 and Caden Kickbush chipped in 12. Pierce's toughness in the post was vital for the Rebels in the second half, when the 6-foot-5 senior center scored 11 of his points.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but trailed 16-15 at the end of the first quarter. North Linn closed the half on an 8-0 run and owned a 33-26 advantage at intermission.
The Lynx (26-1) extended their lead to nine points on the first basket of the third quarter. Gladbrook-Reinbeck slowly cut into the deficit over the next six-minutes, 45-seconds, closing to within 42-40 at the end of the period.
Smoldt drained a three-pointer to open the final quarter, putting the Rebels up 43-42. Gladbrook-Reinbeck then scored the next six points as part of an 8-0 run and led the rest of the way.
Jake Hilmer scored a game-high 20 points to lead a pair of North Linn players who tallied double-figures.
With the loss, North Linn moves to the consolation championship at 10 a.m. on Friday (March 10). The victory extended Gladbrook-Reinbeck's winning streak to 18 games and advanced the Rebels into the title game at 6:05 p.m., also on Friday.
