Defending Champ Cedar Rapids Xavier Makes Semifinals

A near-flawless second half sparked Cedar Rapids Xavier to a victory over Mount Pleasant in the Class 3A quarterfinals of the Iowa High School Boys State Basketball Tournament Tuesday afternoon (March 7, 2017).

The Saints (14-11) turned a one-point halftime deficit into a 59-44 victory by making 14 of 18 shots over the final 16 minutes of play. The win moved the defending state champions into the semifinals for the third-straight year.

Xavier trailed 21-13 at the 6-minute, nine-second mark of the second quarter. The Saints outscored Mount Pleasant 9-2 the rest of the half, cutting the deficit to 23-22 at intermission.

The defending champs took control of the game in the third quarter. Xavier started the period with a 16-6 run and owned a 38-29 advantage at the 3:03 mark. The Saints coasted from there, taking a 45-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

Three starters scored in double-figures for Xavier, which was led by Max Techau's game-high 20 points. Brady Sartorius tallied 19 points for Mount Pleasant (22-3).

The Saints next play top-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock in the semifinals at 6:35 p.m. on Thursday (March 9). The Go-Hawks beat Xavier, 76-54, during the regular-season.
