Class 4A: Iowa City West vs. Newton – BOXSCORE

Iowa City West advanced to the Class 4A semifinals of the 2017 Iowa High School Boys State Basketball Tournament with a 57-51 victory over Newton Wednesday afternoon (March 9, 2017).

The top-ranked Trojans secured the quarterfinal win by outscoring the Cardinals 14-6 in the fourth quarter. A jumper by Devontae Lane with four-minutes, 21-second remaining broke a 45-45 tie and put Iowa City West ahead to stay.

Lane and Connor McCaffery, the son of Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery, each scored 18 points to lead the Trojans. Connor Gholson led the Cardinals with a game-high 24 points.

Newton, making its first to state since 1992, ends its season at 19-6. The Trojans, who are in the tournament for the seventh-straight year, take a 21-3 mark into their semifinal game at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
