2018 Iowa High School Girls State Volleyball Tournament

The Cedar Falls express continues to roll right into the semifinals of the Iowa High School Girls State Volleyball Tournament.

The Tigers swept Waukee in a Class 5A quarterfinal match at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids Tuesday morning (Nov. 6, 2018). After a tight first set that featured 12 ties and ended 27-25, the Tigers throttled their train into high gear and dominated the rest of the way.

Cedar Falls jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and coasted to a 25-14 victory. Coach Matthew Johnson's squad scored the first eight points of the third set, which ended 25-9.

The Tigers ended the match with 11 aces, six of which were tallied by Emmy Wedgebury. They left the court without committing a service error.

Akacia Brown led Cedar Falls (45-0) with 11 kills, while Arkansas State recruit Emily Clapp and Dayton signee Alayna Yates each finished with nine. Junior Emerson Green, a UNI basketball recruit, had 33 assists.

The victory over Waukee was the 74th in a row for Cedar Falls, dating back to September of 2017. In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the defending state champions, the Tigers have made winning look easy all season. They improved their match record to 101-2, despite losing six starters and five other seniors to graduation in 2017.

Cedar Falls is trying to become the first unbeaten state champion since Dike-New Hartford accomplished the feat in 2012.

Next up for the Tigers is a semifinal match against Ankeny Centennial at 10 AM on Thursday. The Jaguars (39-3) advanced with a four-set win over West Des Moines Dowling Catholic in Tuesday's other morning quarterfinal.
