Winter sports competition at Wartburg College won't begin before the year ends, due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.

The American Rivers Conference announced Monday that women's and men's basketball, women's and men's indoor track and field, and wrestling competition will be postponed until at least Jan. 1, 2021. The league's Presidents Council voted unanimously to approve the recommendation of the ARC's Directors of Athletics Council.

According to a press release, the postponement is for all games, scrimmages, exhibitions and/or joint practices.

The decision, however, does not prohibit practice in those sports. Indoor track and field teams can start practicing immediately. Basketball and wrestling teams can start preparations for their season no earlier than Oct. 1.

Along with Wartburg, other members of the American Rivers Conference are: Buena Vista, Central, Coe, Dubuque, Loras, Luther, Nebraska Wesleyan, and Simpson.

Last month, the league's Presidents Council announced the postponement of four sports from the fall to the spring semester. Conference officials are expected to release schedules for football, women’s and men’s soccer, and volleyball later this month, the press release said.
