There's a new nonprofit grocery store that recently opened in the Time Check neighborhood of Cedar Rapids and, according to its management and staff, its name supports its purpose perfectly.

From their Facebook page:

The Cultivate Hope Corner Store is a small, nonprofit grocery store providing reduced-cost produce that is fresh and local, as well as other dry goods and food staples. The Corner Store is an initiative of local nonprofit Matthew 25

The store is run by Matthew 25 and is located at 604 Ellis Blvd. NW.

The store is located in the historic Hosmer building, which is notable in itself because according to the Matthew 25 website, that site was originally home to a grocery store in the early to mid-1900s.

Their goal is not only to serve Time Check and the surrounding area but anyone from around Linn County who could benefit from their services.

Al Pierson, who is the owner of nearby Pierson's Flower Shop and the president of the Northwest Neighborhood Association, calls it a positive alternative to convenience stores in the area, and Matthew 25 Executive Director Clint Twedt-Ball calls it a "social enterprise". It may actually lose money, but because of Matthew 25's 501(c) 3 status the store will survive on grants, and it will actually host classes teaching customers how to cook and learn the value of proper nutrients.

Cultivate Hope Corner Store has been doing a "soft opening" for the last few weeks, but according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, will be having its official grand opening this Wednesday, April 27, from 4-7 p.m.

The event features free food samples and an opportunity to meet some local vendors. You can also stop by and enjoy music, kids’ activities, giveaways, and all-day (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) deals.
