The final phase of a multi-year project to reconstruct Iowa Highway 57 in Cedar Falls is about to begin.

According to Iowa Department of Transportation Engineer Ron Loecher, the road work will begin Monday if the weather allows. Construction crews will be rebuilding the highway -- also known as West 1st Street -- between Highland Drive and Francis Street.

Information released by the Iowa DOT shows the project will involve reconstructing the busy Hudson Road intersection and underground utility-related work. Traffic control will be set up prior to the start of construction, which requires closure of the highway's northern lanes.

IDOT officials said the two lanes will be closed for approximately three weeks, depending on the weather. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained in a head-to-head pattern through the construction zone for the duration of the project.
