Cantaloupe Sold In Iowa Linked To Salmonella Outbreak

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is urging people not to eat, sell, or serve cantaloupe that were recently recalled due to an outbreak of salmonella.

The Des Moines Register reports that the FDA and the CDC are investigating a salmonella outbreak that has gotten at least 43 people sick across 15 different states. 17 of those people have required hospitalization. The Register reports that officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the week leading up to their illness. Over half of the people interviewed reported an exposure to cantaloupe. Three brands have issued recalls of cantaloupe and pineapple products due to possible salmonella. They include;

• Sofia Produce LLC. They operate under the name 'Trufresh.' They recalled all sizes of fresh cantaloupe with a label that reads 'Malichita'. They recalled all cantaloupes sold between October 16th and 23rd.
• Grocery store chain Aldi announced a recall on all cantaloupe, cut cantaloupe, and pineapple spears in clamshell packaging with best-by dates of October 27-31st.
• Vineyard Fruit and Vegetable Company issued a voluntary recall of all fresh-cut cantaloupe products.

According to the FDA, the recalled cantaloupe products were sold in stores in Arizona, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Texas, and Florida, according to the Register. The FDA says that consumers should not eat any of the recalled products. If you are unsure if your cantaloupe has been recalled, throw it away just to be safe. If you believe you have symptoms of salmonella, contact your doctor immediately.
