Some of my best childhood memories were made on the baseball field. My athletic career was not long and storied like some people's. However, there was enough of it to remember how much I loved being a part of a team. The wins and losses of each season and how each game played out have long faded away in my memory. But the memories of hanging out with my buddies and all the shenanigans in the dugout and in between games, those...I will never forget.

After last summer, and all of the disappointment brought on with coronavirus restrictions, I think kids are more excited than ever to get back on the baseball and softball fields and spend time with their friends. Registration is now underway for the upcoming Optimist youth baseball and softball season. As the Cedar Valley Sportsplex website says, "youth sports are a great way for kids to build self-esteem, interact with peers, and develop talents."  Also, I don't think enough can be said about learning about teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Optimist offers different leagues for boys and girls in each age group 2nd through 8th grade. All new players to the Major League and Triple-A leagues must attend a skills assessment session on April 25th at the Cedar Valley Sportsplex. Hurry and get signed-up before April 18th. Each player receives a full uniform. Practices will begin May 10th, with a league tournament at the conclusion of the program. For more information about each league and to download a registration form or to register on-line click here.

We'll see you on the ball diamonds this spring and summer!
