The accidental discharge of a weapon turned fatal in Elk Run Heights early Friday morning (Feb. 26, 2016).

According to information released by Black Hawk County sheriff's officials, deputies responded to a report of a person down just after 12:30 a.m. When they arrived at the scene, authorities observed a man being administered CPR.

Chief Deputy Rick Abben said an investigation showed that the male subject had returned home after work and was in possession of a handgun. As the man exited his vehicle, he dropped the weapon. When the gun hit the ground, it discharged and shot the man in the leg.

The victim was transported to Unity Point-Allen Hospital in Waterloo, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not yet released the man's name.
