A Year Ago Today This Week — Iowa was Colder Than Mars
The final week of January 2019 was brutally cold in Iowa. The wind chills bottomed-out into the -50s and -60s.
On January 30th, Waterloo broke a 1951 record of -25*. Estherville, in Northwestern Iowa, broke an 1899 record when temperatures hit -29* that morning.
The University of Iowa, Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Drake, and others canceled classes that week for multiple days.
The high temp on Mars on 1/24/19 was 23*. (see below)
