Wartburg Women Get First NCAA Victory Since 2001

Miranda Murphy's career-best scoring effort sparked the Wartburg women's basketball team to a 65-49 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament at Oshkosh, Wis., Friday afternoon (March 4, 2016).

The sophomore from Alleman tallied 18 points to lead all scorers, while senior Kailey Kladivo (Traer) and Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) joined her double-figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Kladivo now has 1,204 career points, which ranks ninth-best in program history. Sommer needs four assists to tie the single-season school record.

Wartburg (20-7 overall) led 31-25 at intermission as Murphy scored half of her points before the break. Sophomore Morgan Neuendorf (Shell Rock) compiled a 5-0 run by herself in the last 1:07 of the frame.

The Knights opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run and led by as many as 14 points in the session.

As a team, Wartburg owned advantages in all three shooting percentage categories and held Wisconsin Lutheran to a team field goal percentage of .295 and only .250 from three-point land. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Warriors (20-8), while the Knights remain undefeated (3-0) in the all-time series against them.

Wartburg is making its 10th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. It's the first time since 2001 the Knights have advanced past the first round.

The Orange and Black reached the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2010-11 season and 11th time in program history.

UP NEXT: The Knights will face #11/16 Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday at 7 p.m in Oshkosh, Wis. The Titans advanced the second-round with a 63-53 win over Wisconsin-Superior Friday night.
