The Cedar Valley SportsPlex is Waterloo's newest recreational facility. It opens to the public Saturday (January 18, 2014) at 8 a.m.

The $27-million state-of-the-art facility features a full-size gymnasium, a turfed field, a running track, an indoor playground, a pool with a slide, a golf simulator, child care, specialized classes, personal trainers, locker rooms, and rooms for parties and meetings.

“The SportsPlex allows individuals of all ages to feel connected,” said Rick Young, the local businessman who spearheaded the fund-raising effort to build the facility on behalf of the Waterloo Development Corporation (WDC).

The WDC’s goals for the SportsPlex are to improve the health and wellness of area citizens and energize economic development as a cornerstone of the city’s Riverfront Renaissance Plan.

“The Cedar Valley has never had an all-encompassing facility like this,” said Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark. “It will give people of all ages and abilities the chance to become healthier, happier citizens.”

The project broke ground in April 2012, following a decade of planning and fund-raising. A grand opening ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. today.

The SportsPlex will be run by the City of Waterloo Leisure Services Department.
