Waterloo police are investigating a downtown shooting that left one person injured on New Year's Day (Jan. 1, 2016).

Several officers responded to a bar on East 4th St. shortly before 2 a.m. after receiving a call from the business that patrons were refusing to leave at closing time.

While at the bar, police noticed a group of people in a nearby alley between Lafayette and Sycamore streets. As officers approached, they heard several gunshots and the crowd immediately dispersed the area.

According to police, one victim suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The injured person was transported by Waterloo Fire Rescue ambulance to a local hospital.

A Waterloo officer fired once at an armed suspect. The shot missed and the person fled on foot, police said.

Officers chased several people and made multiple arrests.
