UNI Student Faces Felony Charges for Alleged $7,000+ Fund Theft
A strange case coming out of Cedar Falls this week.
According to reports, a 22-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing funds from a University of Northern Iowa student organization. She is facing possible fraud charges for supposedly using a credit card from a student org for personal purchases.
The woman being accused is Courtney Jarrett, a student at the college.
What Exactly Did She Allegedly Do?
Authorities from the University of Northern Iowa Department of Public Safety are claiming she used the organization's card to make 165 purchases totaling $7,066 over the course of the summer.
Reports say that she confirmed that she used the card for some of the following purchases at the following places/with these businesses:
- UNI Bookstore
- Whisky Road in Cedar Falls
- Allegiant Airlines
- United Airlines
- Delta Airlines
She apparently also purchased MLB tickets to a White Sox game in Chicago. In addition, she reportedly had ten debit card transactions worth approximately $1,452 placed to her Venmo account.
Charges The Student is Facing
Officials say that she was arrested on Wednesday, November 1st for three counts of second-degree theft and three counts of unauthorized use of a credit card.
All of these charges that she is facing are considered class D felonies in the Hawkeye State. Those that are charged with these sorts of felonies don't see too much jail time and is the least serious type of felony.
Experts say that a crime categorized as a class D felony is punishable by 5 years in prison and a fine somewhere between $1,025 and $10,245.
Jarrett has been released from jail pending trial.
What Organization Did She Allegedly Steal From?
The student org was not named in specific in legal proceedings as of yet. However, Jarrett did serve as the Executive Director of UNI’s Dance Marathon. This group puts on events to raise money for the Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, reports confirm.
