Train Derails Near New Hampton, Leaking Anhydrous and Fuel

Residents in and around the city of New Hampton have been given the all-clear to return to their homes, after a train derailed, carrying anhydrous and fuel.

The incident happened Sunday (Aug. 29) southwest of New Hampton. Some of the rail cars carried anhydrous ammonia and diesel fuel, which began to leak, prompting an evacuation of area residents.

Winds were helpful in keeping the anhydrous cloud away from New Hampton.
As a precaution, the conductor and engineer of the train were taken to MercyOne Hospital in New Hampton, treated and released. No one else was injured.

The Iowa DNR was also called in, to monitor nearby streams for any possible fish kills.
Residents and motorists are being asked to stay away from the site, because of the work equipment being hauled in to remove the rail cars.

Also 220th Street, between Jasper Avenue and Ivanhoe Avenue will remain closed.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says several law enforcement agencies in Iowa were involved in a 12-state human trafficking operation.

D-P-S says Operation United Front involved simultaneous state human trafficking operations throughout the day on Thursday and into early Friday morning.

The report says Iowa officers executed 10 search warrants, identified five businesses involved in sex trafficking, made 11 arrests, and seized a large quantity of cash.

The operation was coordinated by Missouri and also included officers from Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
