This Unique Practice In This Eastern Iowa City Is Illegal

Every state in America has a law or two that might make you scratch your head and think "what?" According to The Lawyer Portal, you can't drive blindfolded in Alabama, you can't wash your neighbor's car without permission in Los Angeles, you're not allowed to drive a black car on a Sunday in Denver, and it's illegal to run out of gas in Youngstown Ohio. All of these make you wonder how those laws haven't been corrected or changed in the year 2022. The state of Iowa is no different when it comes to goofy laws.

Back in August, I was curious if you'd actually get in real trouble for breaking some of these goofy laws in Iowa and this unique practice is no different. This particular practice is illegal in Cedar Rapids.

If someone wants to try out this unique practice, would they really get in that much trouble? Would the person doing the practice get in trouble as well as the individual who uses the service? I can't imagine you would get much more than a fine if you were caught doing this.

According to Liner Law, Clairvoyance, palmistry, phrenology, or any kind of fortune-telling is prohibited within the city limits of Cedar Rapids in Linn County.

You already know what it means to have your fortune told or to have your palm read, but do you know what phrenology or clairvoyance means? I had to look them up.

According to Dictionary,

Phrenology is defined as "the detailed study of the shape and size of the cranium as a supposed indication of character and mental abilities." 

Clairvoyance is defined as "the supposed faculty of perceiving things or events in the future or beyond normal sensory contact."

As strange as this entire law is, do you have a guess as to why it would've been illegal in the first place? In my opinion, in the most basic sense, I'm guessing they were trying to stop scam artists from taking people's money. Plain and simple. I also highly doubt you would ever get in real trouble for practicing this. Maybe at most you'd get a fine?

If you planned on becoming a fortune teller or palm reader in Cedar Rapids, maybe just play it safe and suggest just head over to Marion or Hiawatha.
