While much of Iowa has been hit by worsening drought, our farmers have taken advantage of the wet conditions and are reaping the rewards in this year’s yields.
The good news is that almost the entire country east of the Mississippi isn't suffering drought conditions. The bad news is, Iowa sits on the other side of the river.
Waterloo received a minuscule .87” of rain in the month of June, far below the monthly average of around 5” for the city.
There were only measurable amounts of rain in June on just five of the 30 days, as illustrated below:

The U.S. Drought Monitor is updated each Thursday, and this week's update shows a large growth in both the "moderate" drought area and "abnormally dry" area.
Over 50% of Iowa is now experiencing "moderate" drought in the latest update, while nearly 90% of Iowa is considered "abnormally dry."
