Since Friday (Sept. 16, 2016), when news broke that Trelka was asked to resign after the city reached settlements in a series of cases involving the use of excessive force by local police officers, community members are rallying behind the chief. Many people have posted on Facebook and other social media sites that they plan to attend tonight's city council meeting to show support for Trelka, who's been Waterloo's top cop since 2010.

Words of support toward Trelka were also written in chalk on the sidewalk outside Waterloo City Hall today (pictured above).

According to sources, Trelka told some police officers last week that he's been asked resign by the end of the year. Neither Trelka or first-term Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart, however, have confirmed the news publicly.

Trelka, 52, also serves as Waterloo's Director of Safety Services, a position he's held since 2011.

The council meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at Waterloo City Hall.
