Separate Bremer County Crashes Occur In Same Area Along U.S. 218 [Photos]
Icy conditions kept area law enforcement officials busy, responding to multiple accidents during the winter storm on Monday (Jan. 16, 2017).
Two crashes occurred in nearly the same spot about an hour apart in Bremer County, both on the U.S. Highway 218 curve south of Waverly.
The first accident happened just after 4 a.m. Deputies responded to a two-vehicle mishap and discovered that an Iowa Department of Transportation snowplow truck -- driven by Kelly Cole, 54, of Cedar Falls -- collided with a semi that was stopped on the shoulder of the highway.
At the time accident, authorities said Cole was removing ice and spreading salt on the pavement in an attempt to clear the roadway of ice. As she was driving, the snowplow truck slid sideways and struck the semi.
Sheriff's officials said both vehicles were able to drive away after the crash.
The second accident happened just after 5 a.m. in the same area of U.S. 218. According to authorities, a semi sitting on the shoulder of the highway was sideswiped by another southbound semi that did not stop.
Officials said John Lund, 33, of Allison, pulled the semi he was driving onto the shoulder of the highway because of icy road conditions. After striking Lund's rig, the second semi continued southbound on U.S. 218.
No injuries were reported with either accident.
