A comedy horror cult classic is reportedly set for a reboot, according to Hollywood sources. As reported by Variety, Gremlins will be reimagined as an animated series from Warner Bros and Amblin Television.

Originally released in 1984, the Gremlins film was a huge success, making $153 million on its $11 million budget. The tiny mogwai creatures have become iconic horror characters, inspiring the band name for post rock leaders Mogwai.

Peter Gabriel contributed to the original Gremlins soundtrack, while music from Slayer, Faith No More and Jeff Beck were featured in the 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

“The potential series is said to be a period piece that would follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played in the films by Keye Luke, as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo,” Variety reports. “The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television. Both Warner Bros. and Amblin produced the films on which the show will be based.”

The new Gremlins animated series will reportedly be released on Warner’s upcoming streaming service, Warner OTT, which is set to compete with entertainment giants like Netflix and Hulu.

Warner Bros. and Amblin both declined to comment on Variety’s story.
