Possible Severe Weather Thursday in Iowa
After the first batch of rainfall this morning, the day will heat up into the upper-80s, and storms are expected to redevelop and will have the potential to be severe. Damaging winds, large hail, and even tornadoes are a possibility.
The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed Eastern Iowa at a 'Level 2' (Slight) risk of severe weather this afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a total of 54 Severe Thunderstorms for its 54 county coverage area. That number is the fourth-fewest up to this point of a calendar year. (Fewest is only 32 Severe T-Storm Warnings issued in 1988 by June 24)
So far in 2021, the National Weather Service in Des Moines has only issued four Tornado Warning in its 51 county coverage area. That number is tied with 2016 for the fewest all-time up to this point of a calendar year, dating back to 1986.
