Buchanan County authorities have released information on a recent traffic accident involving the Jesup Police Chief.

The crash happened Feb. 24, sometime between noon and 6 PM, on Baxter Avenue north of Jesup. Sheriff's officials said a police department SUV, driven by Jesup Police Chief Josh Evans, was stopped along the road with its emergency lights on, as Evans was trying to help some stranded motorists.

According to the report, visibility was near zero at the time, and travel was not advised. Strong winds had blown snow across the road, causing drifts.

Authorities said a pickup, driven by Robert McMartin of Jesup, collided with the rear of the police chief's vehicle. They confirmed that poor visibility played a role in the accident.

Minor injuries were reported and no medical treatment was needed.

Officials are charging McMartin with failure to maintain a reasonable and proper speed for road/weather conditions.
