One Person Dies In Fayette County Accident

A two-vehicle accident in rural Fayette County has taken the life of an northeast Iowa man.

The crash happened around 1:45 PM Wednesday at the intersection of Iowa Highway 3 and "W" Avenue, northeast of Oran. The Iowa State Patrol said a car driven by 19-year-old Melody Hewitt of Oelwein, pulled out onto the highway, and was struck by a semi driven by 66-year-old Charles Meyers of Edgewood. According to authorities, Hewitt failed to yield when she entered Iowa Highway 3 from "W" Avenue northeast of Oran.

Officials said Meyers died in the accident and Hewitt was injured. She was taken to an Oelwein hospital for treatment.

The accident was covered by the Iowa State Patrol, with assistance from Fayette County sheriff's officials, Iowa Department of Transportation, MercyOne Ambulance, Fairbank Fire and Ambulance, Oran Fire and First Responders, and Westgate Fire Department.
