New Waterloo Council Members To Be Sworn In
A new year brings a new look to the Waterloo city council.
Three newly-elected representatives will take their seats on the council this week. They'll be sworn into office at the same time two other re-elected city officials renew their oaths.
The public is encouraged to attend the swearing-in ceremony, which starts in the council chambers at Waterloo City Hall, 715 Mulberry St., at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2018). The ceremony will begin the weekly council meeting, which is being held a day later than usual this week due to the New Year's Day holiday on Monday.
Representatives Sharon Juon (At-Large), Margaret Klein (Ward 1) and Chris Shimp (Ward 5) were each elected to their respective seats in November. All three will be sworn-in to serve four-year terms.
Mayor Quentin Hart and Ward 3 Councilman Patrick Morrissey will also be sworn-in to begin their second four-year terms. Both city leaders won re-election in November.
During the city council meeting, elected officials will be asked to approve the appointment of Juon to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem. In that role, Juon would assume mayoral duties in the event of Hart's absence.
“Beyond her exemplar qualifications and experience, Sharon conducts herself in a non-partisan manner,” Mayor Hart said in press release announcing the swearing-in ceremony. “I have great confidence in her leadership and ability to fill this role.”
The ceremony and regular city council meeting will be broadcast live on Waterloo Community Television Access Channel 17.
