
Iowa Confirms First Flu-Related Death of 2025–26 Season
It's the holiday season in Iowa... and, cold and flu season, too.
Unfortunately, the flu has claimed its first victim in the state of Iowa, and experts are reminding Iowans that it is important to take precautions this holiday season.
The First Flu Death of the Fall/Winter Season
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed the first influenza-related death of the 2025–26 respiratory virus season.

The person was an older adult from southwest Iowa.

According to the latest Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report, flu activity in Iowa remains very low, and hospitals are reporting low admission rates for respiratory illnesses.
Still, health officials say now is the time for Iowans to take simple steps to protect themselves and their families.
State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse noted that holiday gatherings often bring people together with family and friends they may not see regularly.
He said the best way to keep celebrations, workplaces, and communities healthy is for people to stay home when they’re sick and to talk with their healthcare provider about getting vaccinated.

Vaccines can help prevent serious illness and death from influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.
HHS encourages Iowans, especially those with chronic health conditions or higher risk factors, to talk with their doctor or trusted health care provider about which vaccines are recommended this season.
