I was scrolling through social media earlier this week, not really paying attention to what I was taking in when something caught my eye. I remember seeing the words "Caitlin," "Clark," and "pardoned by the governor."

My initial thought was, "Caitlin Clark gets five minutes off from basketball and she is already getting in trouble with the law?"

After looking a bit closer at this story, it turns out that's not exactly what went down.

Governor Kim Reynolds Pardons Turkeys Named After the Iowa Phenom

On Tuesday, November 26th 2024 Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds continued a festive tradition, of pardoning turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving. The names of these two fowl friends?

Caitlin and Clark...

Now, it's starting to make sense, right?

The pardoned turkeys were raised by a teen turkey farmer named Ava Moline. She is a fifth generation turkey farmer at Golden Prairie Turkeys in Manson, according to reports.

The tradition of pardoning turkeys right before Thanksgiving began in the White House in 1947, according to a report. It was actual President Harry Truman who issued the first turkey pardon.

Iowa followed suit with this fun tradition several decades later in the 1970s.
