Eat your veggies! They're good for you. So good for you. Well, unless it's being recalled. Then, maybe not so much.

Unfortunately, that's the case with this story, which comes to us from a farm in Michigan. Now, we love our farmers. As we speak, combines are rolling across the fields of opportunity here in Iowa. This story focuses now on field or sweet corn. Not on soybeans, but on produce. As mentioned, those "healthy" vegetables.

According to a Detroit Free Press story, the farm in question was forced to issue a recall after it was discovered something... kinda nasty was found on the crops.

During a routine inspection of Kuntry Gardens, (Kuntry? Really? This is supposed to be clever, I assume) inspectors discovered that two 5-gallon buckets of untreated human waste (POOP!) were dumped onto the fields.

Let that sink in for just a second. Human waste. Poop. Doo doo. Whatever playful way you say it, and lord knows we all create it, that's what was dumped on the fields. What's worse, the... poop, came right from outhouses on the farm. Eww.

The story says the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development warned residents not to eat anything from Kuntry Gardens, but rather to pitch it (or burn it...) and ask for a refund.

The produce that got the feces dumped on it includes:

  • Green beans
  • Greens cabbage
  • Cucumbers
  • Eggplant
  • Onions: red and yellow
  • Peppers
  • Squash
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Tomatoes.

Luckily, and I mean luckily, none of this product made its way to Iowa. Using untreated human waste is illegal, as you might imagine. Why is it weird that human, um, fertilizer, be used when most all fertilizer is animal excrement? It's not so much that it's weird. It's that it was untreated and came from an outhouse.

For the record, Iowa is the largest creator of fecal waste in the country, according to US News.
