There’s a Good Reason Why More Iowans Are Staying Home on Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is upon us! Turkey day, and the real kickoff to the holiday season, some might say. It's also the start of the really busy travel season. Flights fill up, so do freeways across the county.
This year, with COVID essentially relegated to the back page, you'd think more Iowans than ever would be traveling in '22, right? Well, not exactly.
With costs of goods and services higher than ever, and gas still not what anyone with a brain would call "affordable", many Iowans are electing to skip holiday travel, at least for Thanksgiving.
According to a study from a car company in Florida, the average Iowan is only logging 93 miles of travel this Thanksgiving. Truth be told, I'm one of those. My wife and I will go to her family in NE Iowa this weekend to celebrate Thanksgiving. The trip is only about 42 miles, which is under that 93-round trip.
What about asking for help with covering costs? The same study found 1 in 5 would suggest friends or family contribute to their travel costs. Talk about an awkward conversation to have for many... "Hey aunt Diane, I'd LOVE to come for Thanksgiving. How about a hundo to help cover gas?"
As you might imagine, another reason many people are opting to scrap travel plans and stay home is the cost of shopping. With prices on the rise, and Black Friday on the horizon, many Iowans would rather save on shopping costs than spend on travel ones.
