It's the Monday after Daylight Saving Time. We shouldn't be working right now. We should be home recovering. This twice-a-year time change has got to stop. Our sleep cycle deserves better. Our health deserves better! And it's an issue that both sides of the political aisle agree on!

Time Magazine reports that the Sunshine Protection Act passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate last year, but stalled in the House. But earlier this month Senator Marco Rubio reintroduced legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent. When speaking about the twice-a-year time change, Rubio stated,

This ritual of changing time twice a year is stupid. Locking the clock has overwhelming bipartisan and popular support. This Congress, I hope that we can finally get this done.

Experts say that ending the time changes has actual health benefits including the reduction of heart attacks and strokes. As I sit here typing this I feel like I'm a zombie, trapped somewhere in a missing hour of time. Why do we do this to ourselves? When did we decide that Daylight Saving Time was a good thing?

Time reports that the practice of Daylight Saving Time was started during World War I. Countries used the time change to save power and fuel. But the extra daylight at the end of the day was also a benefit to America's farmers, allowing them to stay in fields longer. The time change ended after the war but became permanent again in 1966 with the passage of the Uniform Time Act. Only Arizona and Hawaii choose not to observe Daylight Saving Time, according to Time.

So when will it end? Will Congress take up the cause this session so I don't have to figure out how to change the clock in my car? We'll have to wait and see. But this antiquated practice needs to end. Now if you'll excuse me...I have some sleep to catch up on.
