What You Need to Know About Life Expectancy in Iowa
Life, it's one of those things you can kinda get into. It's fun to be alive and among the living. That's not a dig on vampires I'm sure they're fine undead people. If you like the whole living thing there are places you can go where the living might be a little better for you and in some ways that's Iowa.
What is the life Expectancy in the United States?
People are not living as long as they once did but that could be changing. Life Expectancy in the United States has been on the decline but CDC statistics show things could be getting old.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), U.S. life expectancy is on the upswing for the first time in two years! People born in 2022 can expect to live an average of 77.5 years, which is a nice little bump from the 76.4 years we were looking at in 2021. Yay for progress!
Now, let’s take a moment to appreciate how this increase is a welcome change after a rough couple of years. Life expectancy took a hit in 2020 and 2021, mainly thanks to the pandemic and drug overdoses. The 2021 report was a real downer, showing the lowest life expectancy since 1996—talk about a buzzkill!
Woh, now, let's not pop the champagne just yet. We’re still not back to pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, life expectancy was a solid 78.8 years, so we still have some catching up to do. But hey, at least we’re moving in the right direction! Here’s hoping we keep climbing and maybe we’ll be living long enough to see flying cars after all! I didn't say driverless, I said flying. I think we'll see flying cars first. I kid driverless cars, please don't run into me.
Can You Live Longer in Iowa?
Iowa is holding its own when it comes to life expectancy—it's actually higher than the national average and sits comfortably in the top half of states! Back in 2020, Iowa’s life expectancy was right in line with the national average, but lately, things have taken a bit of a downturn for both Iowa and the country.
Iowa, as of late has been in the throes of a significant rise in the rates of cancer among Iowans and that is bringing life expectancy down—bummer, right? But hey, at least Iowans are still doing better than most! Let’s just hope we can turn things around soon. You can read about the reasoning behind the rise in cancer here.
