What does it mean to be 'rich'? Well to many it means to "have a lot of money." I kid, of course. You can be rich in many aspects of your life with very little money in your bank account. But let's say you are monetarily rich. First of all, congratulations. You're buying the next time we go out. But also, where are you most likely to live here in Iowa?

The Des Moines Register reports that a recent study was done using data from the Census Bureau American Community Survey. And according to that census data the richest city in Iowa is Polk City, a northern suburb of Des Moines located in Polk County. As of July 2023, the city has a population of 6,303 residents. The median household income of Polk City? $152,536 which is 103% higher than the U.S. median income according to the Register.

While Polk City might be the richest city in Iowa, that doesn't translate into Polk County being the richest county in Iowa. The Register reports that according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the richest county of Iowa's 99 counties is Mitchell County.

Mitchell County is in northeast Iowa and sits on the border with Minnesota. It has a population of just over 10,600 and a per capita income of $96,075 according to the Register.
