Central Iowa’s Oh My Dog Rescue Gets Donation from Miranda Lambert’s MuttNation Foundation
Central Iowa’s Oh My Dog Rescue just hit the jackpot thanks to country music superstar Miranda Lambert and her MuttNation Foundation! After being around for less than two years, the rescue got a delightful surprise: a $5,000 grant from the Mutts Across America program, which picks one rescue or shelter from each state every year.
Thanks to Who13 we learned co-founders Kara Berhow and Holly Kilstrom were over the moon with excitement.
“We were totally floored!” exclaimed Berhow. “We got an email from Miranda Lambert’s Foundation saying we’d won the grant. It’s a huge deal for us, especially since we just started our rescue a bit under two years ago. We thought we knew a lot from our previous experience, but getting this grant feels like a big pat on the back. We’ve got this amazing group of volunteers we call the Mutt Mafia, and they’ve been instrumental in our journey.”
Why did this rescue get the grant?
What makes Oh My Dog Rescue stand out? They’re a foster-based operation, meaning each dog is already chilling with a family before finding their forever home. Our Basset Hound Buford came from a rescue like that. All the dogs have a home they live in until they find a forever home. It seems to be the best way to help animals that may be already stressed due to the situation they're in.
“Being foster-based is fantastic because it helps dogs transition smoothly from their old life to a new one,” said Berhow. “We pull dogs from high-kill shelters, breeding facilities, or tough situations, and they get to relax and be themselves with us. For example, we know our dog Melon might be a bit shy at first, but we set him up for success so that when he meets his new family, it’s a perfect fit. It’s all about creating those happy endings!”
What will they do with the grant money?
The $5,000 grant will go straight into making the dogs even more fabulous with funds for veterinary care and grooming.
