Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and confirming what some in the state already know. Bears are returning to Iowa, and residents could see more and more bears in the coming years.

The Des Moines Register reports that officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources stated that there are typically between 2 and 5 bear sightings in Iowa each year. They are usually young male bears looking for food, and females. While it can be exciting to see the animals, it can also lead to human-bear encounters.

When Are Most Bear Sightings in Iowa?

The Register reports that most black bear activity in Iowa takes place in May and June. This is during their breeding season, and when they are most likely to head south from Minnesota and Wisconsin into Iowa. Officials say that Iowa went from having just a couple of bear sightings a year to more than four bears passing through each year.

Are Black Bears Native to Iowa?

Yes, black bears are native to the state of Iowa. However, they were eliminated when the state was settled in the 1800s, according to the Register. Minnesota has an estimated black bear population of around 16,000, while there are an estimated 24,000 bears in Wisconsin. DNR officials also note that bear sightings in Iowa appear to be individual bears. No breeding population has been established.

What Should You Do If You See a Bear?

The Register reports that if you do see a bear, give them PLENTY of space, 100 yards or more, to get where they're going. Remember that bears are afraid of loud noises. From a safe distance, clap your hands or bang pots and pans together to scare them into moving on.

The Register reports that black bear attacks are extremely rare. Most incidents happened due to unsecured food sources.
