A foot of snow on the ground. Bitterly cold temperatures. Make no mistake, winter is here, and you want to keep your home warm for your family. But how high should you set the thermostat during the winter months?

Programmable Thermostat Will Save You Money

Experts say that setting your thermostat to 68 degrees when you're home, and then down to between 60 and 65 degrees when you're asleep or away from home, will save you money during the winter heating season, according to CNET. Running it any warmer will reduce efficiency and lead to higher heating bills. The Department of Energy says that turning your thermostat down up to 10 degrees for around 7 hours a day could save you 10% on your utility bills.

What Do Eastern Iowans Set Their Thermostat To in the Winter?

We decided to ask our listeners what they set their thermostat to during the winter months. Personally, I set ours at 68 degrees and don't drop it at night or when we're away from home.

Most of the comments revealed that Eastern Iowans keep things in the mid to upper 60s for the most part. But there were also many who said that 70 degrees or higher felt the best to them.

The warmest thermostat setting? 75 degrees. The lowest setting was 58 degrees. The overall consensus was that a programmable thermostat is the way to go, and a slight reduction in temperature when you're not home seems to be the plan most Iowans subscribe to.
