New ‘Dateline’ Episode Details 2021 Tama County, Iowa Murder
Murder, Snapchat, and a not-so-secret affair...
On Friday, December 12th, NBC aired a brand new episode of 'Dateline' that featured a brutal crime committed in Iowa back in 2021. Titled "The Farmer's Wife," the two-hour special outlines the murder of Ryan Cooper, a 42-year-old Iowa farmer that was killed in his home in the small town of Traer. The case finally came to a close this fall, with two Iowans being sentenced to life in prison.
Who Was Ryan Cooper?
According to his online obituary, Ryan Cooper was a born and raised here in Iowa. He was born in Waterloo in 1979, and he graduated from North Tama High School in Traer in 1998. The obituary reads:
"After high school, he pursued his passion for farming and joined the family farm. Ryan was well known for being a hard working farmer, truck driver and cattle producer. He was proud to be continuing the Cooper farming legacy."
Ryan had four children: three sons and one daughter. In addition to his work on the farm and spending time with his kids, Ryan was an Iowa State fan that enjoyed Busch Light, snowmobiling, visits to the Lake of the Ozarks, and "customizing and accessorizing everything with a motor."
What Happened to Ryan?
On June 18th of 2021, first responders were called to Ryan and his wife Karina Cooper's home in Traer, Iowa. When first responders arrived on the scene, they found Karina sitting on top of Ryan's body in his recliner, covered in his blood and hysterical. Ryan was dead, and it was later discovered that he had been shot twice. His children were all inside in the home at the time of the incident, and Ryan's brother Aaron was on the scene shortly after getting a frantic call from Karina.
As the small town rumor mill began to churn, news of an affair came to light. Karina had been romantically involved with a local man Huston Danker, and there were Snapchat messages to prove it. An article from the Des Moines Register reads:
"Snapchat conversations show she had a romantic and sexual relationship with Danker, where they fantasized about getting married and wanting Ryan Cooper out of the picture, according to trial testimony. They made plans to use a life insurance payout to start a new life together."
Thanks to differing accounts of what happened, we don't know for sure if it was Karina or Huston that pulled the trigger, but that detail didn't derail the investigation. Both Karina and Huston were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in 2024. 46-year-old Karina was arrested in February of that year, while 27-year-old Huston was arrested in Cedar Rapids a couple of months later.
Were They Convicted?
Yes! People reports that Karina went on trial in July of 2025 and was found guilty by a jury. Then, in August, Huston plead guilty to his charges, and he was sentenced in October. Both Karina and Huston were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
