When your dad was a starting quarterback for a football team in the Big Ten, you play the very same position. But for the son of a former Iowa Hawkeye quarterback, football isn't the future.

Matt Sherman played quarterback at the University of Iowa from 1994 to 1997. He was a starter for three years in Iowa City and was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 1996. He played briefly in the Arena Football League for the Iowa Barnstormers in 1999. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that his son, Cade Sherman, is also a quarterback for his high school near the Twin Cities. But the younger Sherman won't be coming to the state of Iowa to play football.

What Sport Will Cade Sherman be Playing?

The Gazette reports that Sherman is coming to the state of Iowa to play hockey. Cade Sherman was drafted on Tuesday by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the USHL Phase II draft. The 17-year-old left winger was a fourth-round pick. Sherman, who is a high school senior, has committed to play hockey at Augustana University of South Dakota, according to the Gazette. He'll play at least one season in the USHL first.

Cade Sherman Returns to the Home of Both His Parents

Matt Sherman grew up in St. Ansgar, Iowa, and his wife, Betsi, is an Iowa City West graduate, according to the Gazette. Sherman said that he was having lunch at school when he got the call that he'd been drafted by the RoughRiders. Sherman told the Gazette, "It was a cool experience and a fun day today. I’m very excited about the RoughRiders...My grandma is from Iowa City and still lives there. I’ve been to Cedar Rapids, been to a couple of games."

Why Did Cedar Rapids Draft Cade Sherman?

RoughRiders head coach Mark Carlson told the Gazette that the staff got to see Sherman play several times and that he had a great year at Rosemount High School. Carlson called him a "tremendous athlete" whose best hockey is ahead of him.

The Gazette reports that the RoughRiders now have 50 players under contract. That includes the draft picks from Tuesday, returning players from last season, and players on the club's affiliate roster.
