A local grocery store that was started by lottery winners will soon become part of a larger grocer here in Iowa.

Brisk Street Market & Café is a locally owned, full-service grocery store that opened in Bondurant Iowa in 2014. The store got its start when Mary Lohse won a winning Powerball Jackpot ticket worth $202 million in 2012. The Lohses used the winnings to give back to the community, opening up a grocery store was one way they did so.

It offers a wide range of services including; a Loyalty Card Member program, a table service restaurant and drive-thru, deli, coffee, ice cream, local wines, movie rental, catering, propane exchange, stamps, and lottery tickets, and more.

In a recent release, the small grocer announced its agreement with the Boone-based grocer Fareway. The purchase will be finalized in early 2023.

Fareway CEO Reynolds Cramer says the company is excited to expand to serve the Bondurant community and to continue the legacy that it comes with.

Eight years ago, Brian and Mary Lohse brought a local grocer to Bondurant, and we are grateful they believe in Fareway to carry on their efforts.

While the grocery store will be rebranded as a Fareway, there will still be some pieces of the past left behind. The grocer plans to honor the tradition of full service by continuing the café’s operation.

As of current plans, Brisk Street Market & Café will be closed in January to undergo the remodeling process. While the Fareway remodel is going on the Café will continue to operate.

Brisk Street Market & Café will join the 131 stores currently being run by Fareway Stores across seven states.
