Iowan's, it's time to roll up our sleeves and do what we do. Step up in a time of need and help out our friends and neighbors.

American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage

According to a press release, "as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants, and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation’s blood inventory....donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are urged to make an appointment to give as soon as possible to prevent further impact to patients."

Blood is perishable, it must constantly be replenished by generous blood donors

Many people that deferred care during the height of the pandemic, now have more advanced disease progression, requiring increased blood transfusions.

"Over the last three months, the Red Cross has distributed about 75,000 more blood products than expected to meet these needs. As a result of this shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes."

“As many people begin to enjoy travel and time with loved ones again this summer, patients are relying on the generosity of donors to help ensure they have access to the treatment they need."  said Amber Evans, Regional Donor Services Executive for the Nebraska-Iowa Region.

Summertime activity idea: consider donating blood

World Blood Donor Day was celebrated yesterday (June 14) with the aim to raise awareness of the need for safe blood, blood products, and the critical role that blood donors have in public health. But just because that day has passed, that doesn't mean you can't give this week, this month, or sometime this summer.

Find a place to donate blood in Iowa

If you've received a COVID-19 vaccine, don't worry, in most cases, you can still donate. Right now, as a thank-you, those who come to donate now through June 30 will receive a $5 Gift Card via email, courtesy of Amazon. There are several opportunities to donate blood in eastern Iowa this month, to find a location near you, click here.

Here's a sad statistic: according to "38% of the American population is eligible to give blood, but only 2% actually donates." As Iowan's and Americans, we can do better than that, in fact, we have to do better than that. Remember, the life you may be saving is that of a loved one, a friend, or even your own.
