According to the Des Moines County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a home on Saturday evening for an assault between household members.

Deputies found that 37-year-old Nita Christina Smothers of Burlington had assaulted her mother and caused bodily injury.

Smothers was arrested and is charged with serious domestic abuse assault. She was taken to the Des Moines County Jail and held without bond.

This is not her first time in trouble with the law. In the early morning hours of May 26, 2017, she was also arrested for domestic assault and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

In February 2020, she was detained by Des Moines County Sherriff’s Deputies on charges of Criminal Mischief, Interference with Official Acts Causing Injury, and Assaulting a Peace officer.

In August 2020, she violated a no-contact order in Burlington and was arrested again.

And just a few weeks ago, the 37-year-old was arrested by deputies after failing to appear in court. She was jailed.

Let's hope that she gets the help that she needs.
