[UPDATE 10/16 6 AM] The Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed the human remains found in a farm field approximately 3 1/2 miles north of Montezuma on September 30, 2021 were of Xavior Harrelson. [ORIGINAL STORY 9/30/21] Three weeks ago today a heavy law enforcement presence in Poweshiek County indicated authorities may have a new lead in the case of missing 11-year-old Xavior Harrelson of Montezuma. Today, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has confirmed human remains, that appear to be of an adolescent, have been found in Poweshiek County.

According to our news partner, CBS 2 Iowa's News Now, Mitch Mortvedt, the assistant director of the Iowa DCI, confirmed that the remains were found on a farm property north of the town of Montezuma. Though Mortvedt said the remains have not yet been identified he said the clothing found matched what Harrelson was reportedly wearing when he disappeared. It could take up to two months for the remains to be identified.

KCRG reports the remains were found by a farmer at around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon in a field near the intersection of 110th Street and Ewart Road, north of Montezuma. The field had not been gone through by search crews in previous efforts to find the missing boy. It's approximately four miles from Xavior Harrelson's home, according to KCRG.
