A former Waterloo Firefighter has experienced what it's like to have his own home on fire.

Firecrews were called out Monday to the Jack and Beverly Wood home, located on Bobbi Lane in Waterloo, when smoke and fire filled their kitchen.

Beverly, the only one home at the time, had been using her bread maker, and was in another room, when their smoke detectors went off. Beverly found the kitchen on fire, escaped the home unharmed, and called 911.

Jack, who was apparently not home at the time, had retired as a fireman with the Waterloo Fire Rescue Department several years ago. The couple's son, Jeff, is also a firefighter.

Damages to their home were estimated at $100,000. The exact cause remains under investigation.
