An accident that killed a semi driver in rural Fayette County last week has claimed a second life.

According to Oelwein Schools officials, 19-year-old Melody Hewitt died of the injuries she suffered in the two-vehicle crash. They said in a Facebook post on Saturday that Hewitt was a recent 2019 graduate of Oelwein High School and was employed by the district.

After learning of Hewitt's death, Oelwein Schools officials made counselors available Sunday for any students, family, or community members who wanted to talk with someone or process their grief. District officials also plan to have counselors available, as needed, in the weeks leading up to the start of school for anyone who feels the need for those services.

The Iowa State Patrol said Hewitt failed to yield at an intersection and pulled into the path of the semi, killing the driver. They identified the victim as 66-year-old Charles Meyers of Edgewood. Following the accident, Hewitt was taken to the Oelwein hospital for treatment.

The crash that killed Hewitt and Meyers occurred around 1:45 PM Wednesday at the intersection of Iowa Highway 3 and "W" Avenue, northeast of Oran.
