Many Northeast Iowa law enforcement agencies will be participating in a Free Drug Drop-off event this Saturday (Oct. 22).

Authorities recommend residents, who have expired or unused prescription medicine, to dispose of it properly, to protect your family, community, and environment.

Medications no longer needed should not be flushed down the toilet, to protect the local water supply.

This is a confidential, no-questions-asked event, sponsored by Northeast Iowa Task Force.

Most drop-off sites will be open from 10am to 2pm Saturday.

Participating agencies include sheriff's offices in Fayette, Howard, Chickasaw, Clayton, Allamakee, and Winneshiek Counties.

Also collaborating are police departments in Manchester, New Hampton, Elkader, Guttenberg, Mar-Mac, West Union, Postville, Decorah, and Waukon.

They ask that you keep substances in their original containers if possible, liquid containers should be sealed in a plastic bag, and identity information on prescriptions should be crossed off.

Unidentified medications will be accepted.

They will also take: prescription and over-the-counter meds, vitamins, supplements, thermometers in plastic bags, samples, hydrogen peroxide, and needles or other sharp objects that should be placed in puncture-proof containers.

They are not able to accept bloody or infectious waste.

If anyone has questions, they may contact their local law enforcement agency.
