Don’t text (or shop) and drive.

It’s illegal --- and you may hit a sheriff.

A Florida woman is in custody after she ran into a 57-year-old Sheriff who was out on a bike ride.

He was riding around his neighborhood about 4 PM when a car struck him from behind and took off, leaving him lying on the ground. The mirror of the car impaled his back.

The 20-year-old woman didn’t stop to check on the man, she just continued down the road. Thankfully, a truck driver saw what happened and immediately pulled over to check on the Sheriff.

On his official Twitter account, he said:

Thank you all again for your messages and kind words. I have some road rash, a few stitches on the gash from the passenger side mirror and a fractured fibula that the doctors hope will heal on its own. I consider myself lucky to be back on my feet today.

He later Tweeted that the woman had been caught:

The young lady who hit me is in custody on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury. She says she was shopping on Amazon on her phone when she hit me. Please let this be a warning to put your phones down while you’re driving before you kill someone.

He also posted footage captured from a Waste Pro truck’s dashcam, which shows the accident in real time, then the top Sheriff lying on the ground. (below)

Sheriff Chitwood was treated at nearby hospital for road rash, a cut that required 10 stitches and a broken leg.

According to the Miami Herald, last August, Chitwood took his first day off in 33 years after he contracted coronavirus.

This is the second time since 2017 that he has been hit while riding a bike.
