For the second time in four years, the Waterloo East girls have captured a team title at the Iowa High School co-ed state bowling tournament.

The Trojans won the Class 2A crown Tuesday, beating second-place Keokuk. East had a two-game grand total of 3,058, finishing 101 pins ahead of the Chiefs. West Delaware took third with a two-game score of 2,777, and Waverly-Shell Rock's total of 2,580 was fifth-best among the eight teams.

The title was the second in school history for the Trojans, who won their first in 2016. The East girls have qualified for state each of the past five years and six of the last seven.

The Trojans had three of the top eight bowlers in the Class 2A field. Senior Abigail Williams claimed the individual state championship, rolling a two-game score of 493. She finished 20 pins ahead of West Delaware senior Lorna Niedert, who claimed runner-up honors. Waterloo East sophomore Malorie Cary (411) and senior Stephanie Burge (393) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Waverly-Shell Rock senior Marisa Schneider and junior Jasmine Ator also were among the top-10 individual scorers. Schneider ended up in fourth-place with a combined score of 461. Ator's 389 total put her in eighth place.

Tuesday was the second day of competition at Cadillac XBC in Waterloo, which is hosting the co-ed tournament for the third-straight year. On Monday, the Charles City girls and boys teams each finished third in Class 1A. Vinton-Shellsburg junior Christina Harrelson finished as a state runner-up in the individual girls competition, as did Charles City sophomore Cael Bohlen on the boys side.

The co-ed state bowling tournament wraps up on Wednesday with the Class-3A portion of the competition. Cedar Falls, Waterloo West and Marshalltown are among the eight boys teams hoping to win the state championship.
