Strong Start Pushes Waverly-Shell Rock Into State Semifinals
Balanced first-half scoring lifted Waverly-Shell Rock to an early lead and sparked the top-ranked Go-Hawks to a 58-45 victory over Atlantic in the Class 3A quarterfinals of the Iowa High School Boys State Basketball Tournament Tuesday afternoon.
Waverly-Shell Rock jumped on Atlantic early, building a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Go-Hawks never trailed after Austin Phyfe opened the scoring with a three-point basket to start the game. The 6-foot-7 UNI recruit was one of eight Waverly-Shell Rock players who scored in the first half.
The Go-Hawks increased their lead to 16 points early in the second quarter and went to the locker room with a 32-21 lead over the Trojans at halftime. Waverly-Shell Rock outscored Atlantic 26-24 in the second half.
Phyfe ended the game as the Go-Hawks' leading scoring, tallying 11 of his 17 points after intermission. The players scored in double-figures for Atlantic, which got a game-high 21 points from Garrett Frankin.
Waverly-Shell Rock takes a 23-1 record in a semifinal game at 6:35 p.m on Thursday (March 9). The Trojans end their season at 19-6.
