Waterloo Men Star In MVFC’s Latest Marquee Win [Video]

Anyone who doesn't think the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) is the nation's best FCS league need only to look at this year's game scores for proof it is. Anyone who knows anything about the FCS level of college football knew Iowa's game against North Dakota State would be a challenge for the Hawkeyes. 

Cam Pedersen booted a 37-yard field goal as time expired, giving North Dakota State a monumental victory over No. 13 Iowa at Kinnick Stadium Saturday afternoon (Sept. 17, 2016). The kick ended the Hawkeyes' 14-game regular-season winning streak and snapped their nine-game winning streak at home. Two Waterloo natives had starring roles in the victory.

Head Coach Chris Klieman, now in his third season guiding the Bison, graduated from Waterloo Columbus High School and the University of Northern Iowa. Sophomore running back Lance Dunn, Jr., who rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries, was a standout athlete at Waterloo West High School.

The victory was the sixth-straight for the five-time defending FCS National Champion Bison against FBS opposition. North Dakota State is now 7-2 all-time versus foes from major conferences.

Statistically, Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams don't lose to Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams very often, but the underdogs seem to win a few each season. This year, eight FCS teams have claimed wins over FBS opponents and three of those victories belong to Missouri Valley Football Conference members.

On Sept. 3, the UNI Panthers beat the Iowa State Cyclones, 25-20. Illinois State followed with a 9-7 win at Northwestern on Sept. 10. Now, comes North Dakota State's victory at Iowa.

The Bison (3-0) outgained Iowa 363 to 231 in total yardage and held the ball for 36 minutes, 40 seconds. North Dakota State rushed for 203 yards in the second half, while holding the Hawkeyes to just 59 total yards after halftime. Iowa (2-1) rushed 34 times for just 25 yards in the game.

Saturday's loss was Iowa's first to an FCS opponent in program history.
